Cell-instructing Topographies and 3D Structures

We are developing surfaces and 3D structures with micro and nanotopographies designed to enhance or minimize specific biological responses. The topographical patterned surfaces can be fabricated through soft lithograph techniques in a number of inert or bioactive materials and hydrogels such as PDMS, self-assembling hydrogels, protein gels, or other readily available hydrogels. We have also developed a fabrication technique to create surface topographies within 3D structures using a double-layered patterning and stacking technique. We have created structures that have been shown to stimulate cell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation.
