  • Clara L. Hedegaard co-organizes “Pint of Science: Tech me out” at Queen Mary University of London

    Our PhD Student Clara L. Hedegaard, co-organized and hosted the Queen Mary University of London “Tech me out” chapter of the popular UK-wide festival “Pint of Science”, which took place in hundreds of pubs in 100 cities across 12 countries around the world from the 15th to the 17th of May 2017. The international festival sees thousands of scientists simultaneously stand up and talk about their research to the general public in pubs around the world.

  • David Barrett wins 2016 Malcolm Ferguson-Smith Young Investigator Award

    Congratulations to our PhD Student David Barrett, who has won the 2016 Malcolm Ferguson-Smith Young Investigator Award, which honors the best article published in the Prenatal Diagnosis journal in 2016 with a first author under the age of 40 years. David won this award for his article titled “Connexin 43 is overexpressed in human fetal membrane defects after fetoscopic surgery”.

    The project consists of tuning and optimizing a peptide/protein-based self-assembling matrix designed to nucleate and guide the growth of hydroxyapatite in an anisotropic and hierarchical manner.     Alvaro Mata is to give a Plenary lecture at the 4th EURO BIOMAT 2017 (The European Symposium & Exhibition on Biomaterials and Related Areas) in Weimar, Germany, May 9-10.

    The conference takes place every two years, with the 2017 meeting aiming to address the growing interest of science and industry in the different aspects of the creation, characterization, testing and application of biomaterials and closely related areas. It brings together experts in closely related areas, such as biomimetics, biomineralization and biopolymers.

  • Sherif Elsharkawy wins RMS Beginners’ Competition

       Our PhD student Sherif Elsharakawy has won the annual Royal Microscopical Society (RMS) Beginners’ Competition for his presentation entitled ‘Multiple Length-Scale Imaging of Biomimetic Hierarchical Mineralized Materials’. His research focuses on engineering protein-based membranes and gels with mineralizing domains in order to develop novel hierarchically ordered apatite crystals as a step towards dental enamel regeneration.

Mata Group Bioengineering

We are a highly interdisciplinary group passionate about developing creative and innovative technologies to generate creative solutions for a variety of bioengineering applications. We use interdisciplinary approaches that integrate engineering, materials science, chemistry, nanotechnology, biology, and medicine to develop materials and devices with hierarchical order, biomimetic character, spatio-temporal control, adaptability, tuneability, self-healing capacity, and functionality. Current research in our lab includes the development of in vitro biomimetic environments, dynamic and directed self-assembling systems, molecular patterning of 3D environments, and molecularly-designed bioactive implants. Applications range from tissue engineering and regenerative medicine to drug discovery.
