Sherif ELSHARKAWYPostdoctoral Research Fellow
Area of Study
Project: Bioengineering of Protein-peptide Scaffolds for Dental and Biomedical Tissue Engineering Applications
Key Areas of Expertise
- Clinical Dentistry
- Oral Biology
Sherif is a qualified dentist and oral surgeon who holds a Bachelor of Dental Surgery and Oral Medicine (BDS) with honours degree from Alexandria University, Egypt (2010). After completion of a postgraduate Tissue Engineering course at Alexandria University, he become interested in research that lead to discover novel treatment modalities. Therefore, he moved to UK, accomplished his MSc in Oral Biology with Distinction at Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry and ranked top of the class (2014). He worked during his master degree on synthesizing biomimetic ordered apatite crystals for dental implant coating, and biological hard tissues repair and regeneration.
Sherif is currently a PhD student at the Mata Group after receiving a scholarship from the Institute of Bioengineering (QMUL). His research focuses on engineering protein-based membranes and gels with mineralizing domains in order to develop novel hierarchically ordered apatite crystals as a step towards dental enamel regeneration. He is also interested in precisely guide the nucleation and crystal growth into specific locations and directions using micro/nano fabricated topographies. He is fascinated by modern microscopic and spectroscopic techniques. Sherif has awarded the prestigious IADR Heraeus Kulzer award (2016).
